By Plane

The Asheville Regional Airport (AVL) is located about 20 minutes outh of downtown.  There are car rental agencies in the lobby at AVL.  Book everything ahead, since everything gets very busy in October.

 

There is a city bus that runs to the airport regularly during the day, but not on Sundays.  Info here.

 

The Greenville-Spartanburg Airport (GSP) is about an hour from Asheville and occasionally considerably cheaper than AVL. 

Kayak.com includes GSP as a “nearby airport” if you select that option in your search.  The nearest major airport is Charlotte-Douglas (CLT), about 2 hours from Asheville by car.

 

 

 

A word to the wary: the major highways that run through Asheville are often labeled in confusing ways.  The main north-south route, I-26, is generally labeled as an East/West road, “West” actually being North and “East” being South.  To increase the confusion, when I-26 joins with I-240, “I-240 West” is the same as “I-26 East” and vice versa.  It is best to use a good map and careful directions, probably a compass, and maybe smoke signals.
